Nagasaki Shrine and Temple Tour with Tea Ceremony
Enjoy a beautiful day in Nagasaki taking in the beauty of the Nakashima river and the Temple District! This is one of the most beautiful areas of the city, and it is packed with hundreds of years of history as well. The tour will start at Meganebashi, the oldest arched bridge in Japan, built in 1634. The bridge's name comes from its spectacle-shaped appearance when reflected against the river. From here we will continue to Kofukuji Shrine, a Chinese temple boasting over 400 years of age. Here, we will be able to participate in an authentic Japanese tea ceremony while viewing their beautifully manicured garden. Next we will finish the tour at Suwa Shrine, the largest Shinto Shrine in Nagasaki. The shrine was erected by orders of the Tokugawa Shogunate to push back agaisnt the spread of Christianity in 1614. The shrine is also home to the Suwa Animal Park, where you can feed some of the animals that call the shrine home.

The tour starts with Dejima, the only western settlement allowed in Japan during the period of isolation. Take a walk through this restored town and imagine life as a Portuguese trader hundreds of years ago Following Dejima, we will continue through the Nagasaki Seaside Park on our way to the Oura Catholic Church, the only western structure in Japan deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After this we will take the Glover Sky Road to Glover Garden, a neighborhood built by Thomas Glover for himself and the other influential western merchants of the late 1800's and early 1900's. Glover played a significant role in the Meiji Restoration, and learning his history is a step toward understanding the Japan you see in present day.
