I'm Jim Austin, an American, and I'm married to Akiko, who is Japanese. We met in Japan not long after I arrived in the country 29 years ago. We started our journey together in the lively city of Fukuoka, where we lived for 20 years. After two decades of urban living, we took a leap of faith seven years ago and relocated to a peaceful mountain farm village in Saga Prefecture, where we've contentedly resided ever since. Relocating from the USA, I quickly developed a strong affection for Japan, attracted by its scenic beauty, cultural wealth, and the hospitality of its residents. This love has been significantly shaped by my wife, who has educated me on the country's traditions and lifestyle.
Over the past 27 years, Akiko and I have embarked on many journeys throughout Japan, with a particular focus on exploring the island of Kyushu. Our travels have allowed us to delve deep into the heart of this region, discovering its rich tapestry of local cultures and forging meaningful connections with its people.
Kyushu, often referred to as Japan's southern gem, has offered us a unique perspective on Japanese culture that differs from the more commonly over-touristed areas of Tokyo and Kyoto. Our explorations have taken us from the vibrant streets of Fukuoka, known for its culinary delights and friendly locals, to the mystical ancient forests of Yakushima, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. We've soaked in the therapeutic hot springs of Beppu and Yufuin, and immersed ourselves in the international atmosphere and historical significance of Nagasaki. Throughout our journeys, we've had the privilege of experiencing Kyushu's distinctive cultural traditions. We've witnessed sacred Kagura dances in Takachiho, dedicated to Shinto gods, and savored local delicacies at yatai food stalls in Fukuoka. Our travels have led us to hidden pottery villages like Okawachiyama, where we've admired the unique Nabeshima ware influenced by Korean artistry.
We've also been fortunate to participate in local festivals, visit numerous shrines and temples, and engage with artisans keeping ancient crafts alive. These experiences have not only deepened our appreciation for Kyushu's cultural heritage but have also allowed us to form lasting friendships with locals who have shared their stories and traditions with us. Our explorations have revealed Kyushu's role as a historical gateway to Japan, showcasing how the region has been shaped by influences from China, Korea, and even Europe. This blend of cultural influences is evident in everything from the architecture we've admired to the fusion cuisines we've tasted.
Through our travels, I've come to appreciate the warmth and hospitality of the Japanese people, the breathtaking natural landscapes ranging from snow-capped mountains to tropical islands, and the way traditional practices seamlessly coexist with modern life. Our years of exploration have not only enriched my understanding of Japan's diverse regions but have also deepened my connection to this fascinating country, making it truly a second home. From the ancient temples of Nara to the futuristic cityscape of Tokyo, from the serene hot springs of Oita to the vibrant coral reefs of Okinawa, Japan offers a tapestry of experiences that continue to captivate and inspire.
